Troy Cassar-Daley has always loved the freedom of the open road. He loves to drive when on tour, particularly in his vintage ‘60s Holden.

That’s right at the heart of Let’s Ride – the first single from his impending 14th studio album, Between The Fires, which is due out this Friday (May 10).

“After my mum died I was going through old photographs at her house and there were so many vivid memories there of what my journey was all about,” Cassar-Daley says of the song’s origin story. “Getting a car, dreaming about the open road and getting out of a small town. “I’ve still got an EH Holden, still love the smell of the vinyl seats and the petrol. It makes me feel like I’m 17 again.”

Who better to sing the song with him than another great road warrior of Australian country music, Kasey Chambers? Of the collaboration, Cassar-Daley says: “I played a show this month out at sheep station out near Cunnamulla. I drove out there and the freedom of travel is just good for the soul. If you’re on someone else’s country, you are a stranger on someone else’s land and the land is giving you something to take back with you. The song is about that, the miles are your friend.

“Kasey loves the journey too, [she] loves to drive everywhere on tour. We sent her the song and said, ‘Sing on the parts you think will suit.’ We’ve been friends for such a long time and she understands how I work. Between us, we have done a lot of miles.”

Between The Fires is available to pre-order here.
