AUS EXCLUSIVE: Hear Destroyer's 'Poison Season' Before Its Release

Canadian indie-rock veterans Destroyer have been a remarkably consistent force since their inception in the mid-1990s, having put out nine studio full-lengths, a cassette and four EPs between 1996 and 2013, an output made all the more incredible considering frontman Dan Bejar also spends his time as part of The New Pornographers, among a few other acts.

Still, despite Bejar seeming like one of the busiest musicians getting about, Destroyer are nonetheless ramping up to release their eagerly 10th studio album, Poison Season, their first such release since 2011's Kaputt. However, there's no sense expecting Kaputt Part 2 — Destroyer have spent the better part of the past 20 years defining themselves by their ability to redefine themselves between albums, and from the sounds of things, nothing has changed (well, it has, but it hasn't — you know what we mean) this time around, informed, as always, by Bejar's consistently shifting interests.

"The first and last songs are actually one song tracked live with quintet," Bejar said in a statement. "I even sang with the band. That song always sung between super-austere and super-mid-'70s Springsteen/Bowie street-rock. In the end, I decided I wanted both. Couldn't really figure out a way to sequence the orchestral version within the record, so I decided to carve it up as a book-ending motif, with the rock version squarely in the middle."
