What you need to know about your BIGSOUND artists.
Answered by: Toby Nicholls
Give us a short description of your music: I guess you could call it hip hop/rap, but I try to mix as many genres as possible into what I produce, write and perform. It's high energy and lately, it's been heaps of fun live.
Which acts are on your must-see list at BIGSOUND? Raj Mahal, Kymie, Johnny Hunter, Kobie Dee, Lauren., Stevan, Hooligan Hefs, Adrian Eagle.
Why should people come and see you among the many amazing bands at BIGSOUND? My live shows are a strong point of my brand. I always aim to connect with the audience and ensure that everyone in attendance has left feeling like they've experienced something new, even if they may have seen me perform previously. Also, I rap heaps good.
What music trends do you think are dominating right now, and do you have any predictions for the coming year? Rap seems to be dominating the pop scene in a lot of ways worldwide and I think in the coming years we're going to see more and more genre-bending between hip hop and other genres such as rock, folk and punk.
In your career to date, what have been the key watershed moments? Key moments in my career include funding and performing my first sold-out solo tour, performing my first-ever festival slot, and being invited to perform alongside Thundamentals in front of 15,000 people. But alongside these moments are some failures that have also helped me guide my way through the industry.

What industry lessons would you like to take away from the BIGSOUND conference? I would like to get a clearer view of what festival line-ups are looking for in terms of booking artists. I would also like to know if there are any jobs in the music industry that might suit someone such as myself (outside of being an artist).
What do you identify as the most pressing issue impacting the Australian music industry at present? The biggest issue impacting Australian music at present is appealing to the overseas market while maintaining an original and authentic image. A lot of local music is tailored around the idea of selling it to the US and it's damaging to authentic Australian music and its ability to be sold.
What is the best bit of advice you've been given to prepare for your time at BIGSOUND? All I've been told by anyone I know is that networking is key. Luckily I'm good at talking.
When and where is your BIGSOUND showcase? 4 Sep, The Wickham, 11.20pm; 5 Sep, The Valley Drive In, 11.40pm.
