Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter
On & On is about creating a new life for yourself somewhere different, and the transition between leaving a particular place that you’re very attached to. It talks mostly about the people and relationships left behind, and how they will always be an important factor in your life.
How long did it take to write/record?
The skeleton of the song was written about a year ago with no melody or vocals by Byron Carney (guitarist). In July of this year, I came back to it and wrote the chorus and most of the verse. Then in August, with our producer Jean Paul Fung (legend), we wrote the rest of the track in our studio in Byron Bay. After the pre-production/writing, we went down to Jean Paul’s studio in Sydney (Alberts) and recorded the final product over three days.
Is this track from a forthcoming release/existing release?
Neither; for the moment it’s just a standalone single.
What was inspiring you during the song's writing and recording?
I grew up in New Zealand, so I guess my inspiration came from thoughts and feelings around leaving my hometown. The lyrics were fostered when I was feeling kinda homesick and realised I don’t really talk to a lot of my New Zealand friends as much as I should, but still think of them all the time. Other aspects of the song relate to my relationships at the time of writing.
We'll like this song if we like...
Hmm.. Tough one. I would like to say The Districts, Violent Soho, Gang Of Youths, Blink-182.
Do you play it differently live?
With this song, we’re aiming to keep it true to the recording. However, there are definitely a few fiddly guitar parts that we change around to make it more functional in a live setting.
When and where is your launch/next gig?
We’re kicking off our single release tour on the Sunshine Coast at Sol Bar this weekend, then working our way down the east cost with a string of headline shows. We have the Gold Coast and Byron next weekend before the remaining dates wrap up early next month. Get to a show!
