More The Buoys More The Buoys

The Buoys are back with their brand new video today, premiering exclusively with The Music today.

Dubbed Bad Habit, the track was produced and mixed by Fletcher Matthews (Sweater Curse, CLEWS, Dear Seattle) and mastered by Steve Smart (The Living End, Vance Joy, Cub Sport), with the video directed by Clover Ryan.

"The band really wanted a clip that would capture their essence and personality as a collective - and so my main focus was finding a way to bring that to life," Ryan told The Music of making the clip.

"This was my third time working with The Buoys, which I’m really grateful for. So I know how they work, and that whatever I throw their way, they’d give it their all. We were all originally leaning towards a sports based concept, but our initial idea got put aside with some pretty bad weather - the week we had planned to shoot ended up being the first time in months that it rained. Coincidentally, I’d met someone the week prior, and somehow our entire first conversation was about the movie Dodgeball

"The interaction must have stuck, and when brainstorming it just clicked. The speed and chaos of the game fits so well with the intensity of the track, and the small amount of players really allowed us to tap into the drama and genuinely just have fun on the day.

"The location we shot at was a sea scouts hall too, so you’d look out the window and see a bunch of water buoys which was pretty funny. At the end of the day, the clip is just the band doing what they love and having fun, and not taking themselves too seriously."

"We didn’t actually play a game of dodgeball for this, we shot it all in parts with one person the focus of each shot and the others chucking the balls - we had to try and gee each other up with lots of heckling and cheering to give it the energy and it needed so we were just screaming 'BALLS, BALLS, BALLS' and 'YOU THROW LIKE A BUOY'..." added drummer Tess Wilkin.

"The shot where Hilary [Geddes, lead guitarist] gets one to the head was a great one to shoot. It was the final one that was thrown a little too hard that really got the reaction from Hilary - genuine shock - that was the keeper!"

“The day definitely pointed out that I shouldn’t ever bother trying to play dodgeball... I think I dodged one ball all day and it was the only shot Clover could edit into the clip," said singer/songwriter Zoe Catterall.

The Buoys are celebrating Bad Habit with a tour, kicking off later this month.

Starting at Black Bear Lodge in Brisbane on Friday 28 May, the tour will then stop by Melbourne and Sydney (two shows). Head to theGuide for all the info and to grab tickets.
