Lovable Brisbane larrikins, Beddy Rays, have today announced they will be releasing their sophomore album, Do What Ya Wanna, on April 18 - and, to celebrate, they’ve just dropped its lead single: Red Lights.

Explaining why the new track was chosen to represent the forthcoming album, the four piece said, “We chose this song because we feel like it sets the tone for the record. It's about overcoming adversity, going through tough times but remaining positive and growing from those moments. Hoping it will resonate with those going through a tough time as it's a reminder that things will always get better.”

Alongside the track comes Red Lights’ quirky western-inspired music video, which was directed, produced and edited by Natalie Sim.

“Red Lights leans into our jangly, indie style of songwriting, which directly inspired the western-themed clip,” Beddy Rays explained. “We wanted to blend classic Sergio Leone-style cinematography with absurd humour and gritty western vibes. Honestly, any excuse to whip out the Akubra works for us."

As for the album itself, Do What Ya Wanna will mark Beddy Rays’ second LP - following on from the success of their self-titled debut album, which won The Triffid’s QLD Album of the Year honour in 2023.

Their sophomore LP will be the band’s first foray into new territory, showcasing a sound that nods to the early eras of punk icons like Green Day and Weezer while embracing the melodic expansiveness of bands like Catfish and the Bottlemen. It’s a natural evolution, though, not straying too far from the slapstick indie-rock Beddy Rays are known for.

Frontman Jackson Van Issum said, “This album is us - our highs, our lows, and everything in between. Writing it was a way to make  sense of all the craziness life throws at you, but it’s also about not taking yourself too seriously and enjoying the ride. That’s what Beddy Rays is all about.”

It’s been a big week for the band - announcing their forthcoming album, dropping a single, and, as of yesterday, becoming two-time finalists at the 2025 Queensland Music Awards. Beddy Rays are up for both the Indigenous Award and the Rock Award for their recent single, Stay The Same.
