Music industry figures, including Billie Eilish and Jack White, have expressed concerns about a second term for Donald Trump following the news that he’d won the 2024 US presidential election.

According to BBC News, Donald Trump hasn’t just secured the electoral college votes required to win the election, winning 294 electoral college votes versus Kamala Harris’ 223 electoral votes – but he won the popular vote, beating the Democratic nominee by over five million votes. At the time of publication, over 50.9% of the US votes went to Donald Trump, while 47.5% went to Kamala Harris.

Donald Trump has become the first former President to return to the White House in over 130 years and the oldest man elected to become President (he’s 78 years old).

While Donald Trump’s Vice President, J.D. Vance, described the win as “a magnificent victory for the American people,” it’s fair to say that many musicians disagree.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, Billie Eilish wrote: “It’s a war on women.”

Under the Biden administration, Roe v. Wade – which protected the constitutional right to abortion – was overturned, with numerous states in the US either completely banning or severely restricting abortion access. NME reports that Trump celebrated Roe v. Wade being overturned.

Jack White had a lot more to say, describing the President-elect as a “known, obvious fascist” and “wannabe dictator.” At the end of a lengthy post that described what he believes will happen under a Trump presidency, White said that due to him winning the popular vote, the citizens who voted him in "deserve whatever evils he’s going to enact.”

Michael Stipe, the former frontman of R.E.M., campaigned for Harris and performed at her rallies. Taking to his Instagram Stories, he shared a post that read: “When a clown moves into a palace, he doesn’t become a king. The palace becomes a circus.”

Singer Ethel Cain went on Tumblr to express her thoughts. In a searing post, she wrote: “If you voted for Trump, I hope that peace never finds you. Instead, I hope clarity strikes you someday like a clap of lightning, and you have to live the rest of your life with the knowledge and guilt of what you’ve done and who you are as a person.”

Artists including Beyoncé, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, and Jason Isbell, who openly supported Harris, haven’t yet shared a reaction to the news.
