Naarm/Melbourne artist Charlie Lane has unveiled her debut album, the vulnerable I’m Okay Now But I Wasn’t.

Released today (Friday, October 18th), the record has been a long time coming for Lane, who has been sharing music for most of the last decade.

As a queer and disabled artist, Lane’s unique perspective on the world has curated a devoted and passionate fanbase, with her stark, devastating lyrics pairing with an energetic and immersive performance style that cannot be ignored.

As she explains, the release of her first full-length album is a huge moment, a heartfelt conceptual statement which collects her experiences as powerfully-empathetic tracks that speak directly to the listener.

“I write to tell people a story,” says Lane. “It’s a form of therapy for me, and I want it to be for my audience too.”

The album also saw Lane working with a number of talented individuals, including Rohan Sfornica who took mixing duties, and shared a co-production role with Adam Heath. Alongside additions from Louis Spencely, Jasmine Johnston, Jethro Kalt, Emma Kelly and Halo Gospel Ensemble, the result is an achievement which Lane herself thought may never have happened.

“I never thought I would release an album,” she says. “Mainly because of my mental state and I’ve always done singles or EPs.

“I've had a lot of gaps throughout the years and things that have set me back, deaths and things like that. I think I just thought, maybe it's just not going to happen. But it has and it’s such a big achievement for me.”

Charlie Lane will also support the album’s release with a run of shows around Victoria throughout November and December, with tickets on sale now.
