More Silverchair More Silverchair

Next week, on March 27th, Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp turns 30. While music fans the whole country over are likely crying out at the realisation it’s been that long since three Newcastle teens turned Aussie music on its head, it’s rightly time to celebrate the occasion.

In fact, that’s exactly what’s happening in Sydney on March 26th, with Sony Music Australia and Metro Social getting behind a special event at the Metro Theatre to celebrate the album's third decade.

Fittingly, there’s going to be live music from contemporary rockers The Buoys, while ex-triple j Music Director Richard Kingsmill will also be on hand to have a chat with founding Silverchair members Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou as part of a Q&A session.

Additionally, there will also be limited Silverchair vinyl available to purchase on the night along with limited edition images of the band, numbered and signed by acclaimed rock photographer Tony Mott.

Of course, iconic frontman Daniel Johns won’t be in attendance, with the singer having rarely taken part in Silverchair activities since their split in 2011.

Gillies and Joannou have remained active in the years since the band’s dissolution, even issuing a book in 2023 titled Love & Pain. The band’s history was the subject of an episode of Australian Story which was later pulled from ABC iView, and prompted Johns to issue a statement in response to the controversy it generated.

Silverchair officially disbanded in 2011, four years after the release of their final album, Young Modern. Since then, Johns has remained adamant that the beloved band would never reunite.

“I was firm that Silverchair was not getting back together and one of the other members kept saying ‘No, we’re just on a break and we’ll be back,’” he told The Project in 2021. "So I was like, 'I wouldn't get Silverchair back together with a gun to my head for a million dollars'. Maybe that was too harsh in hindsight."

Having first formed in 1992 as the Innocent Criminals, Silverchair found widespread fame with the release of their debut single Tomorrow in 1994. Aged only 15, the band would then issue their debut album Frogstomp in March 1995, topping the Aussie charts and kickstarting a career as one of Australia’s next big rock exports.

RSVPs to the special 30th anniversary of Frogstomp at The Metro Theatre are on sale now.
