Green Day Announce 'American Idiot' 20th Anniversary Release

In news that may or may not make you feel old, Green Day’s American Idiot turns 20 this September. To celebrate the milestone, the punk rockers have announced a massive reissue, which includes a Super Deluxe Box Set, Vinyl Box Set, CD Box Set, and more.

Sharing news about the epic reissue on social media overnight (9 August), Green Day revealed that the reissue will be released on Friday, 25 October. They began:

In the summer of 2004, Green Day entered the studio with Rob Cavallo to create American Idiot, uncertain of what the future held. They were audacious, rebellious, and stressed out by the state of the country at the time. American Idiot was crafted as a response to the daily bombardment of media that spreads it far and wide, making us desensitized and weary-filled with themes that still ring true today, even 20 years later.

Adding that they couldn’t have foreseen the impact of the album at the time, such as 23 million copies sold, going six-times platinum, winning multiple Grammy Awards, a Broadway musical, and more, the band continued, “The album turns a whole 20 years old this year, and you know they've cracked open the vaults for a very special 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition that comes out on October 25th.”

From October, Green Day fans can listen to their punk rock opera and all the extras, including unreleased demos, live recordings, B-sides, Blu-ray discs that feature a new 110-minute documentary, the already released film Heart Like A Hand Grenade, and various live performances, all in the box sets.

If you’re not after a box set, you can also get your hands on some limited-edition colour vinyl of American Idiot. To get fans started, Green Day have shared the following, which you can listen to now: a demo of Holiday/Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, the B-side Favorite Son, and a live recording of Minority.

In December, Green Day started teasing an Australian tour in support of their latest album, Saviors.

We haven’t been to Australia in years,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong said on Sunrise.

“We definitely want to come back — maybe 2025. Every time we go to Australia, it’s hard to leave.”
