More Lorde More Lorde

Last week, Lorde teased an impending new era by scrubbing her social media profiles and sharing a snippet of unreleased music. Now, she’s revealed the title of the new song and continued teasing.

Lorde shared a 15-second snippet of unreleased music on TikTok last week. In the video, she walked through New York and sang in her unconventional, introspective signature style, “Since I was 17/ I gave you everything/ Now we wake from a dream/ Well baby, what was that?

Anchored by the synth-pop music associated with her first two albums, 2013’s Pure Heroine and 2017’s Melodrama (and her first EP, The Love Club), Lorde seems to be planning a comeback.

On Wednesday (16 April), Lorde revealed the song’s title – What Was That – and said it will drop “soon.” However, some eagle-eyed fans have spotted a 25 April release date on her Spotify, so stay tuned.

In addition to sharing the new song’s title, Lorde has been communicating with fans in other ways.

Checking in with fans, the Royals singer has traded her usual sending out of newsletters in favour of a texting service. In a new message to fans, she wrote:

I just wanted to say hi because everything is about to change and these are really the last moments where it’s just us, which is crazy but so right.

I’m so ready. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to say that, but I am. I’m so thankful for your patience. I’ve felt your love, I’ve felt you right there. This is gonna be crazy, you have no idea.

If Lorde plans to release a new album this year, it will follow 2021’s Solar Power.

Since the release of Solar Power, Lorde has remained relatively quiet on the new music front. However, she shocked fans last year when Charli XCX nabbed her for a remix of Girl, so confusing, which features on the deluxe edition of Brat: Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not.

Last year, Lorde also recorded a cover of Take Me To The River for the Talking Heads tribute album Everyone’s Getting Involved. More recently, she collaborated with Marlon Williams on the song Kāhore He Manu E from Williams’ first-ever Māori language album, Te Whare Tīwekaweka, which was released earlier this month.
