Nirvana reunited for the second time in two weeks on Saturday (15 February), shocking punters with an impromptu performance to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live.

Performing as part of the star-studded SNL50 event, the band’s remaining members, Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear, weren’t joined by the likes of Joan Jett and Kim Gordon this time, but by pop, hip-hop, rock, and country music chameleon Post Malone.

The band and Malone played a raucous version of Smells Like Teen Spirit and were introduced to the stage by Adam Sandler.

“These next guys played while my cast was there, and it was an explosive moment for all of us,” Sandler said, per Entertainment Weekly. “It changed it all. Three guys rockin’ out in a way no one had ever seen before, led by a young badass who we will never forget. But the music will live on forever. Ladies and gentlemen: Post Nirvana.”

You can check out footage of the performance below.

Post Malone has been a lifelong fan of Nirvana. In 2020, he performed a 15-song tribute to the band for COVID-19 relief. He performed tracks such as Heart-Shaped Box, Drain You, and Something In The Way. He’s also recorded a song called Kurt Cobain, performed Lithium during his 2016 Coachella set, and sang All Apologies at a show in 2017.
