More AC/DC More AC/DC

NSW Premier Chris Minns was grilled on his AC/DC fandom in a Q&A with the state’s Upper House Committees, and he revealed just how much he loves the rock band.

Minns was questioned about AC/DC during a budget estimates hearing this week as 2025 marks the iconic band’s 50th anniversary. Legislative Council member and member of the Legalise Cannabis Party, Jeremy Buckingham, asked why the NSW government didn’t recognise the band on their 50th anniversary last year and noted that the infamous house in Burwood where the Young brothers rehearsed was demolished in December.

“How is it, Premier, that the city that birthed the greatest rock and roll band in the world and the most successful and artistic act in Australian history, that on the 50th anniversary of AC/DC’s formation and first performance… it went unheralded, unnoticed, [and] uncommemorated by your government?” Buckingham asked.

He continued, “In fact, the only thing that did happen was the Burwood childhood home of the Young family, in which they learnt guitar, was bulldozed.”

In a video posted to Instagram, Minns said that he loves the band before saying, “Well, you know, for those who are about to rock.”

Minns then stated that he loves AC/DC before he was asked what he’d done to recognise their cultural contributions to society and the arts. He responded, “I don’t think I’ve done anything, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate them.”

The video then flashed back to 2023, when Minns played the riff to Thunderstruck live on the Kyle & Jackie O Show.

His intention behind the video? Minns indeed does plan to honour AC/DC in a special way.

He captioned the video, “Got bailed up today about my credentials as an #acdc fan - so I thought I’d bring back this clip from 2023.

“But you know I agree, we should pay recognition to one of the greatest (and home grown in NSW) rock bands of all time. Watch this space.”

In August, the NSW government announced it would reduce “red tape” to rebuild the city’s nightlife.

NSW Labor announced its plans to introduce additions to its Vibrancy Reforms, following the already-implemented permanency of outdoor dining, ending single neighbour noise complaints that brought own local pubs and licensed venues, cutting the red tape on activation of street festivals and events, expanding Special Entertainment Precincts, an increased incentive for hosting live music in licensed venues, and more straightforward pathways to extend trading hours while major events are on.

Minns said Sydney’s nightlife has been “strangled” by red tape “for too long.”

He added, “We’re fixing this by removing the restrictions destroying entertainment venues, tackling the housing crisis head-on and helping the city get back on its feet. Having an economy that fires up at 5 pm during the week is critical for global cities like Sydney.”

Earlier this year, a Herald Sun report said AC/DC are “strongly tipped for stadium dates in the last quarter of 2025 as part of their Power Up tour,” according to “tour insiders.”

If this is true, the rumoured shows will coincide with the tenth anniversary of the band’s last tour of Australia.
