More Spiderbait More Spiderbait

Spiderbait are just a week away from kicking off an epic national tour, celebrating the 20th anniversary of their landmark hit Black Betty. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Spiderbait tour without some killer local bands on the roster – and now we know who those will be.

Virtually every show on the 12-date run will feature a different lineup, starting in Brisbane on Tuesday August 13 with Worm Girlz onboard to serve as the local openers. Pelvis will fill the same role in Adelaide that Friday (August 16), while Liquid Nails will kick the party off in Hobart on Saturday August 17, and Grinding Eyes will do the same in Newcastle on Friday August 30, as well as Wollongong the following night (August 31). Polish Club will also perform at all five of those dates.

From there, Spiderbait will be joined by Zerodent at the first of their two Perth shows (which is sold out) on Saturday September 14, while Lonesome Dove will open up the second show the following night (September 15). Abbe May will be the main support for both of those dates.

Melbourne will also see Spiderbait play two shows, both at the iconic Forum, with the second (a sold-out jaunt locked in for Friday September 20) sporting the biggest lineup of the entire tour: both The Vovos and Electric Stardust will perform alongside the Grand Slam hitmakers, as well as main support Private Function. The night prior (September 19), Spiderbait and Private Function will be joined by Destrends.

Polish Club will return to the main support slot for Spiderbait’s Sydney show on Saturday September 21, where they’ll be joined by Richie Weed. Then Adalita will join the festivities for both of the last two shows on the itinerary, alongside Rubypark for the Gold Coast date (on Sunday October 20) and Box Dye in Canberra (on Friday October 25).

In a press release, Spiderbait’s Mark ‘Kram’ Maher said of the band’s eclectic choices for openers: “We always try to make the support bands an important part of the whole experience for the audience and also for the musicians. There are so many great bands and emerging musicians in Australia, this is a great way of supporting those acts, so people can see and experience them live.

“It’s a bit of a responsibility for us when it’s our own show and we can select the bands we want to have on the lineup. Sometimes we may not have seen them play, but we like their story, and it’s always something we try to do whenever we tour. This idea is a great way to feel that wonderful feeling of seeing someone play that you might not have seen before. We’re really excited about all the amazing local talent that will be joining us on this tour.”

Tickets for all of the shows yet to sell out are available here.

Meanwhile, Kram revealed in a new interview with The Music that if it weren’t for the whirlwind success of Black Betty in 2004, Spiderbait may not have stayed together.
