Make Music Day is a celebration of music around the world which takes place on June 21st. The day, which is celebrated every year by more than 2,000 cities globally, was first instituted in 1982 in France by Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture: together, they conceived of a day where free music would be everywhere, all around each city: street corners, parks, rooftops, gardens, and store fronts. Crucially, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances - thus this day has a special, specific emphasis on community and grass-roots music-making.

And this year, the City of Adelaide has exciting plans to join in on the Make Music Day celebrations.

On Saturday, June 21st, the City of Adelaide will be hosting a mini festival intent on showcasing the vitality and diversity of the booming South Australian music scene, with events that will be free for the public to attend. The timing is especially fitting, as this year will mark Adelaide’s tenth anniversary as a UNESCO City of Music.
