Live Review: Allday, Japanese Wallpaper, Nicole Millar, Mallrat

By 7.30pm there was a ridiculously long line of young Allday fans through the centre of Luna Park.

Upon entering Big Top, they were greeted by some catchy hip-hop/pop tunes from Brisbane teen Mallrat who, joined by her live DJ, Denim, kicked off the night with For Real, Sunglasses and Tokyo Drift. She asked how much of the surprisingly large crowd (all present for the first of three support acts) were under 18 and the audience response proved that under-age ragers made up the majority. The rapper, who's only recently turned 18 herself, told her audience, "This next song's about Westfield," before launching into Inside Voices and finishing up her set on a high with Uninvited.

Nicole Millar was the next act to continue hyping up the crowd, the singer-songwriter emerging from thick smoke to loud cheers. Millar's performance of her Peking Duk collab, High, was enhanced by live drums and was a definite gig highlight. She then mentioned how excited she was to perform in her hometown and finished up with hit Tremble.

Japanese Wallpaper brought a bit of different vibe. The young musician from Melbourne's set was a bit more mellow, his songs slower, which matched some moody blue lighting that changed the pace of the night. Joined by a band consisting of a drummer, guitarist and tambourine/keys player who also sang lead vocals on a few songs, Japanese Wallpaper performed some of his hits including Breathe In, leaving the crowd in a calm trance.

Applause for Japanese Wallpaper at the end of his set turned into a loud chant for Allday as the rapper hit the stage with infectious energy. The crowd went crazy as he performed his track Sides, jumping off the stage and running up to fans pressed up against the barricade. He rapped over a couple of other artists' tracks — Chance The Rapper's All Night and Childish Gambino's 3005 — and brought Mallrat back out to perform their collab Baby Spiders.

Noticing a fan's "Send Nudes" poster, Allday started a chant before performing the song of the same name with aforementioned poster in hand. He then took the time to engage in some banter with his audience, explaining his second album took so long because he was busy going to warehouse parties and doing drugs in Melbourne. Allday noted that the best song on that album, Speeding, is his collaboration with Japanese Wallpaper, before bringing him out to perform the song.

Demands for an encore were quickly met with Allday first explaining that all encores are fake and just a ploy to get fans to cheer. But he played You Always Know The DJ anyway, leaving his fans completely satisfied.
