It was a wholesome set that brought her music together with a selection of others that were handpicked by the talented DJ. 2am came and went, the set pressed on, and everyone enjoyed what they had come for – plus a little extra in the interim.

More TOKiMONSTA More TOKiMONSTA

One of Perth's highly anticipated gigs last week was TOKiMONSTA, which kicked off at the Bakery on Friday night around 9pm. Leon Osborn a young progressive glitch-hop producer out of Freo stepped in as the first support act for the night and was laying down some of his signature tracks during a set that was bold and edgy but just chilled enough to make a perfect start to the evening ahead. As the Bakery slowly began to fill we continued to hear the large oscillating noises and glitched out beats of Osborn breaking through their ambient soundscapes.

Following him up we had Cosmo Gets (live) take the stage, bringing a fresh brand of space-boogie disco funk – DJ Shazam's live project – an enigmatic concoction of keys, bass and drum. Pretty great, however, the draw of the beer garden and cigarettes was a little strong for some of us who decided to get some good use out of the favourable AstroTurf outdoors.

It was just at that time when the crowd started to get pretty meaty and the cold outside became almost unbearable that Kit Pop took over from the cosmic boys and brought things inside down to a gritty, bassy and heaving sweat cave, dropping off a set that had everything we love (à la Lunice/TNGHT). It was bass heavy, glitch ridden and seriously fun to swing hips and bob heads to in the dark and crowded inner sanctum of the Bakery. While there was a little confusion from Bakery goers as to where TOKiMONSTA was when she didn't show well past her set time, in many ways it was a fortunate mishap that her flight was slightly delayed. Kit Pop got to press on with his booty shaking magic for a good while longer before finally the lady of the hour stepped up, hot off a straight flight from NZ, casually apologising as she took her place at the decks.

With a bottle of whiskey and numerous Red Bulls at her side the monsta kicked off her set, still rocking the same attire she had on from the flight – the beanie an ample touch considering how chilly it was that evening. Those who chose to stick around for the set despite the delay were rewarded by the LA DJ who did not disappoint. As the crowd closed in on the stage, heads started bobbing to the smooth and sophisticated sounds of Jenifer 'TOKiMONSTA' Lee. She played a set that mixed the mellow and glitchy tunes of her previous album Midnight Menu in with her most recent Half Shadows which brings a heavier and more hip hop reliant sound. It was a wholesome set that brought her music together with a selection of others that were handpicked by the talented DJ. 2am came and went, the set pressed on, and everyone enjoyed what they had come for – plus a little extra in the interim.
