Mayer pips Soundwave's Avenged Sevenfold

More John Mayer More John Mayer

Bluesfest headliner John Mayer has taken his second number one on the ARIA Albums Chart with Paradise Valley just edging out the new album from Soundwave's headliners Avenged Sevenfold's Hail To The King.

The timing was right for both releases, as their albums were released within the week of the acts being announced for their respective festival appearances. The race to number one was tight as well, with Mayer not confident of the top spot until the final day.

Mayer's first number one album in Australia, Born And Raised, hit the peak just over a year ago in June 2012.

Pink's The Truth About Love remained at three, ahead of Fleetwood Mac's 25 Years – The Chain (even though it was the only release in last week's top ten to post an increase in sales, the strong top two meant it dropped a spot from three last week) and Boy & Bear's Harlequin Dream, last week's number one, remains the top local album in fifth.

Other debuts came from DevilDriver's Winter Kills at 14, Franz Ferdinand's Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action at 1, Sara Storer's Lovegrass is impressive at 25, Perfect Tripod's Australian Songs at 29, Wendy Matthews' The Welcome Fire at 31 and the acclaimed new record from the Tedeschi Trucks Band arrived at 48.

Other interesting notes come from US rapper A$AP Ferg whose Trap Lord just missed out on the top 50 at 51. Ellie Goulding's Halcyon Days re-entered the chart at 12, it's previous peak was 16 in October 2012 when it debuted under the name Halcyon.

The ARIA Singles Chart top two remained the same, with Katy Perry's Roar holding off Jason Derulo featuring 2 Chainz's Talk Dirty. The rest of the top ten features the same tracks as last week, with a few position changes. Roar had a ten percent sales drop from last week, but there was an average 13.5 percent drop across the ten as a whole.

The highest debut came from Eminem's Berzerk, which after just a few days of sales debuted at 17. Expect it to trouble the top five after a full week's worth of sales under its belt.

Keith Urban's Shame debuted at 50.

In the compilations chart Triple J House Party Vol. 2 debuted at number one, pushing Now: The Hits Of Spring 2013 to two. Triple j's 20 Years Of Triple J Hottest 100 rounds out the top three in its seventh week in the chart. The latter is only a fraction behind Now and will likely pass it next week.

Western Sydney MC Kerser also scored a number one, with his DVD The No Rest For The Sickest National Tour. Full details on that here.
