Singer, rapper and producer Jaycee may still be an up-and-coming name to many Australians, but he’s teetering on stardom in China. The independent artist hailing from Perth has reached a billion streams for the hit single Mind On You from his 2020 album Life Goes On

The Australian-Jamaican artist began his solo project in 2018, busking in the streets of Perth and bedroom-producing beats. Five self-produced projects later, alongside a constant trickling of singles, have given the multi-hyphenate a decent catalogue to promote in Australia, yet it is the work of Chinese-aimed distribution that has given the singer the best results.

“I was blown away when I found out my song had reached 1 billion streams,” Jaycee remarked in a press release. “To see the way Chinese listeners have embraced my music is truly humbling. It’s incredible to know that my art is connecting with people on such a massive scale.”

The 10-digit accolade was earned via Kuaishou and Douyin - Chinese apps that promote themselves as short-video sharing platforms.

Further fueling his popularity in China, Jaycee has also become a sensation on RedNote, a prominent social media platform that’s now recognised as a substitute for TikTok following the controversial US ban (and unban) of the video-sharing app.

But Jaycee is no stranger to TikTok either, having achieved virality on the app in 2022 following a 15-second remix of the Peppa Pig theme song.

“I pretty much turned the theme song into a rap song,” Jaycee The Sydney Morning Herald reporter Millie Muroi. “I put some drums over it, and made a little rap about eating pigs.”

Riding the wave of this digital success, Jaycee is currently planning a highly anticipated China tour for later this year. The tour aims to hit hotspots Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, as well as the nation of Hong Kong. Dates are still to be announced.

Speaking on the release of the 2020 single to his fanbase, Jaycee focused on gratitude as his mantra for the successful new year.

“Made this song 5 years ago about manifesting and working towards a vision and goal. This should be the one that goes!”
