As the voting period for triple j’s annual Hottest 100 countdown slowly edges towards its end, the station has shared a few insights into the current standings to get you in the democratic spirit.
Currently, there’s a mere 11 days before voting closes and as a result, the amount of votes have given triple j a pretty good indicator of how the current rankings of tracks are looking.
We know they’re not going to be giving us a sneak peek into the actual standings of the songs themselves, but they have alerted us a few interesting facts about where things are at the moment.
Notably, they’ve explained that 0.05% of total votes are currently separating two tracks in the top five. What does that mean exactly? Well, we don’t yet know the total number of votes that have been cast, and historically, the number rises in the final days, but given that last year featured 2.35 million votes counted, it gives you a bit of insight as to the sort of figures triple j are dealing with.
On that same tip, the station have also noted that the song which is currently placed at #7 received more votes in a single day than the tracks which are presently at #6 and #5. If these trends continue, there’s a good chance of a big takeover.
Lastly, triple j have noted that the song that kicks off the countdown is currently up for debate, with only two tracks separating the #100 and #101 position. This isn’t the closest things have been, however. In their 2009 All Time countdown, the statione explained only one vote separated Queens Of The Stone Age’s No One Knows and The Beatles’ Hey Jude.

triple j will be kicking off their Hottest 100 festivities in earnest on January 24th when sister station Double J counts down the Hottest 100 of 2004 (though there’s no word if Jay and The Doctor will be on hand to play the wrong Eskimo Joe song again).
The next day, you’ll find out the Hottest 100 via triple j itself, and after a day off, the long weekend will conclude with the station unveiling the tracks that sit in the #200-101 positions for 2024.
For this year’s countdown, triple j is teaming up with We Are Mobilise as its latest charity partner. The organisation exists to end homelessness, with triple j developing an innovative new approach to help tackle the problem.
Listeners can purchase a Hottest 100 t-shirt for $45, which will cover a night of housing for someone struggling through Mobilise’s Kickstarter program. If you don’t want to purchase a t-shirt, there are other ways to support We Are Mobilise—you can learn more about the charity here.
Voting closes at 5pm AEDT on Monday, January 20th, so don’t miss your chance to have a say in the world’s biggest musical democracy.
