"... It was immediately apparent that their jet lag wasn't going to stop them from putting on a high energy show."
It's been a few years since Los Angeles trio Haim played a show in Sydney, but with their second album Something To Tell You only just out, it was Haim time again for their fans who sold out their show at the Enmore Theatre.
Support act Cameron Avery (of Pond and Tame Impala) opened the night, asking the audience if they were ready to party before clarifying he had no songs in his set for that - only sad songs. The multi-instrumentalist from Western Australia wasn't kidding - he sang and played piano for most of his set, picking up a guitar for a couple of pretty angsty songs. His banter was more light-hearted however, as he informed the audience that he put out an album earlier in the year and was going to sell copies at the concert, but he left them at the pub.
Sisters Este (bass and vocals), Danielle (guitar and vocals) and Alana (guitar, keys and vocals) of Haim kicked off their set with new song Want You Back, and it was immediately apparent that their jet lag wasn't going to stop them from putting on a high energy show. It was a fairly special gig for the band too - with their second record out only a fortnight ago, it was only the first or second time performing a lot of the songs for a live audience. The crowd already knew the songs and sang all the words though, and as a result Haim got fairly emotional playing tracks like Found It In Silence, Night So Long and Little Of Your Love, and let the audience know what a freeing experience it was.
Despite there being a huge crowd, it felt like an incredibly intimate gig. Haim's parents even walked around the audience during the night, talking to fans about their love for Sydney. The trio knew how to make sure everyone had a good time and Este got the whole crowd dancing, at one point standing up on the barricade to dance herself.

They played a perfect balance of 'new Haim' and 'old Haim' - fan favourite songs off their debut album Days Are Gone, including Forever, Falling, My Song 5 and The Wire, that went platinum in Australia after its release in 2013.
They played Right Now for an encore, finishing with their drum solo, where each sister played part of a dissected drum kit or 'cocktail drum kit' - an absolutely epic end to a fantastic show.
