Josie Long: Something Better (MICF)

Josie Long has done a lot of growing up recently. Inching towards 35, the UK comic has started realising that while she's maturing, the world doesn't seem to be joining her. Something Better is unlike any other show at MICF this year. It's political, of course (it's hard to avoid it at this stage, let's be honest), but Long is determined to shine her relentlessly bright light on the matter, offering solace to those lost is the sea of proto-fascist faeces.

While a political offering is a somewhat new venture for Long, the British comedian still delivers to those looking for a pure fix of her smiley, offbeat delivery and beguiling intellect. The take on current affairs is a win for Long, but she still definitely is at the top of her game when she tiptoes back into the comfortable space she's come to be known for. Her tangential whimsy and hilarious points of diminishing returns are typical of her incredible brand of comedy. It's a refreshing relief to know that she is still capable of being silly.

On the other side of this performance, it is ultimately unfortunate that Long's agenda doesn't land as much as her fanciful material. It is undoubtedly brilliant political comedy - needling the state of the world from a fresh and interesting angle - but it seems that much of the audience is here for Long Classic (TM).

Nonetheless, she has a winner of a show on her hands. Something Better is the spoonful of sugar that is so desperately needed in the medicine of topical laughter.
