Live Review: Lisa Mitchell, BUOY

To begin, BUOY graced Newtown Social Club's stage with her gorgeous vocal layering and abstract electronic sounds. Her stage presence improved over time as she frequently grooved out to her tracks and this really seemed to make her whole set radiate. Took Me Up showed off her voice's sweet tone. Another of her tunes, Exit, began with complex ideas but finished crisply as it delved into an electronic-pop drop, pumping up the audience for Lisa Mitchell.

Mitchell's aura hit the stage before she did as a choir of eerie whispers filled the room. She then wandered onto the stage with her guitar and a wireless microphone that allowed her to move more freely around the stage. Opening tune Warhol, one of the more intense songs from Mitchell's new album Warriors, continued with the eerie whispers throughout this track. She then transitioned into the lead single from this album: The Boys. Here, Mitchell waved her arms in the air as she pranced around the small stage, red streamers hanging from her arms. As she sang the catchy lyrics, Mitchell looked as if she was experiencing pure bliss up on stage.

Coin Laundry sounded like the original version and was flawless; the crowd sang along to these quirky lyrics. The whispers then reappeared in another track from the new album called So Wild to bring back the strangely haunting tone. This new vibe within her album Warriors really signifies how Mitchell's grown over the years to create this new intensity. The audience was extra attentive, especially when she invited BUOY on stage for the track Josephine. Their voices blended together perfectly to share the tune's angelic anecdotes. Spiritus then got the crowd swaying and dancing with its percussive beats and carefree ambience. Oh! Hark! encouraged more grooving and singing along.

This evening's encore was the highlight, as Mitchell performed her sweet acoustic ditty Clean White Love. Her humbleness and pure vocal talent impressed the crowd during What Is Love, which was so emotionally pure that it felt as if Mitchell touched every soul in the room with her intensity.
