“I like to think that if Teeth was out in 2004, it would be on the OC soundtrack."
Brisbane pop songstress Mallrat has announced her massively anticipated debut long player today for May 13, nearly six years after releasing her first single.
Entitled Butterfly Blue, Mallrat - aka Grace Shaw - has also dropped a taste of what's to come today with Teeth.
“I like to think that if Teeth was out in 2004, it would be on the OC soundtrack," said Mallrat. "In the song I describe a big, omnipresent 'it'. When I wrote these lyrics I was playing with the idea that we talk about sex and prayer and violence and power with very similar language. I wanted to see if I could blur all of these things into one blurry ball of energy."
Leading out with a trio of EPs, Mallrat quickly became one of Australia's most-streamed artists, with a combined 300 million listens leading to the gathering a massive social following. Five singles from 2017-2019 all hit gold, platinum and multiplatinum status and she's also lent her voice to collaborations with Benee, Kate Miller Heidke, Cub Sport, E^ST and Allday. With that build-up, it's no wonder the impending debut has sparked so much hype.
Always pushing the envelope, Butterfly Blue promises a melting of rock, pop and folk, generously seasoned with an eclectic array of samples including chopped-up Gangsta Pat bars, a flipped recording of a children’s choir performing Lisztomania and distorted effects recorded from discarded children’s toys.

“I’ve always valued music that is interesting, beautiful and unpretentious. Something timeless and not reactive. Butterfly Blue was made with that in mind. It’s a demonstration of not pretending to be anyone else.”
Butterfly Blue is out on May 13 through Dew Process.
