YACHT Backpedal On Sex Tape Stunt: "Sorry For Our Shitty Non-Apology"

Following a week-long sex tape hoax, LA band YACHT have finally come through with an apology after they were slain by fans and their own PR company for insensitively portraying the experiences of actual privacy violation victims.

In a long Facebook statement, the band have backtracked on yesterday's "clarification" of the stunt, in which they said, "it’s disturbing to us that press outlets could make the incredibly irresponsible leap from 'celebrity sex tape' which is the cultural trope this project explicitly references, to 'revenge porn' which is unfunny, disgusting, morally repugnant, and completely unrelated."

YACHT now write, "The reaction to this endeavor highlights a glaring error we made in positioning ourselves as the victims of a leaked sex tape. We understand that positioning it that way from the beginning was an egregious mistake, and are so ashamed we hadn’t considered this beforehand.

The band initially told fans that after the "leak", they would be taking control of the situation by charging $5 to view the clip. After fans were not charged and the tape was inaccessible, YACHT admitted to the stunt but said that there was a "sex tape", albeit one featuring two aliens.

"We take full responsibility for what has happened, and we are truly sorry. We know we’ve broken a bond of trust with many of our fans and friends. Thank you to those that called us out and helped us to understand the gravity of the mistake we made.

"PS: We’re sorry for our shitty non-apology yesterday, too. There’s no justifying it. We clearly didn’t get it then. We get it now."

The band have linked to the music video for I Wanna Fuck You Till I'm Dead, though they say, "We were leaning towards not releasing it at all, but we think it’s important that people be able to see and assess for themselves our intent."
