Australian Idol is returning for its third season since it was rebooted in 2023 next month.
Today, Channel Seven has revealed the premiere date of the ninth season in the franchise: Sunday, 2 February, at 7 pm AEDT on Seven and 7plus. Judges Amy Shark, Kyle Sandilands, and Marcia Hines will return to the panel, as will hosts Ricki-Lee and Scott Tweedie.
The forthcoming season has been described as “the toughest and most surprising” yet, per a press release. What’s making this season so tough? Only 30 Golden Tickets—what this year’s aspiring singers require to get to the next round after the auditions—are up for grabs during the auditions round.
According to a press release, the Top 30 must survive a “gruelling” week of challenges to reach the Top 21. There, they’ll undergo a “transformation” before the competition is narrowed to the Top 12. From the Top 12 onwards, the singers will perform live for viewers at home, who can vote to decide who gets through each round.
A new teaser for this year’s Idol has also been released; you can check it out below. In it, Amy Shark comments, “I don’t think we’ve ever had this many surprises.”

Marcia Hines added, “Australian Idol is like a box of chocolates. You just never know what you’re going to get.”
In October, Kyle Sandilands hinted at the diversity we’ll see in this year’s season of Idol.
“We saw more country last year. Right now, we are seeing a lot of guitar boys, pop girls, a lot of screamo, even,” he said.
He added that the latest season inspired “a lot of great people with some styles we haven’t seen,” stating that the judges are “a little bit open to something new.”
Country singer Dylan Wright won last year’s season of Australian Idol.
Wright won over Amy Reeves and fellow country artist Denvah Baker-Moller, taking home $100,000 in prize money and a recording contract with Sony Music Entertainment Australia. For his final performance, he busted out a performance of Elton John’s Tiny Dancer.
